before you get lashes...
Do you want a simpler morning routine? Want more time for yourself instead of worrying about applying makeup everyday? Lash extensions are your answer. As enticing as this relaxing service sounds, there’s a few things you should bear in mind before getting your lashes done professionally. It’s important to note that this luxury service does require refills with proper aftercare to maintain healthy and beautiful lashes.
Our Lash Cycle
Just like the hair on our body and scalp, we have a lash cycle, which refers to the natural process of eyelash growth, shedding, and regeneration. The lash cycle consists of three phases- anagen, catagen, and telogen.
Anagen phase: the active growth phase where eyelashes are actively growing. It lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks, and during this time, new lashes emerge from the hair follicle.
Catagen phase: the transition phase that lasts for 2 to 3 weeks. In this phase, the lash stops growing, and the hair follicle shrinks.
Telogen phase: the resting phase that lasts about 6 to 9 weeks. During this resting phase, the lash is no longer growing, and it is eventually shed to make room for a new lash growth. This last cycle repeats itself, and a new lash begins to grow.
It’s also crucial to know that not all lashes are in the same phase at the same time, which is why we typically don’t experience an even amount of lash loss. Lash extensions are synthetic fibers that are glued next to, on top of, or under your natural lashes with professional lash adhesive. As your lashes go through their cycle, you will notice some lash extensions shedding along with your natural lashes during the telogen phase. This is completely normal since these are your adult lashes.
Hormones and Lash Retention
During your refill appointment, any extensions that have shed naturally or have fallen are replaced with a new extension. On average refills are every 2-3 weeks. If you have any hormonal imbalances, are diabetic, experience rapid weight loss, take thyroid medication, are pregnant, experiencing menopause, or take supplements that speed up your growth cycle, you will be required to come in sooner. The reason for this is because our lash retention is impacted by the same hormones just like hair on our heads. Estrogen levels affect our hair growth, thickness, and oil that we produce. Oil production will vary when you’re on your menstrual cycle. To get the best out of your retention, scheduling your appointments around your menstrual cycle every 3 to 5 days after your period starts is recommended to avoid high hormone impact.
Understanding Types of Lash Extensions
There are various types of eyelash extensions and each have their own unique characteristics. It’s important to discuss your desired look with what your naturals can handle. For this reason, I always recommend scheduling a consultation and patch test at least 24 hours before your appointment, (especially if it is your first time getting extensions) with several inspo photos to achieve your goals. Lash style depends on what you want to achieve, your lifestyle, and budget. Here's a breakdown of the most common types:
Classic Lashes
Style: A single lash extension is applied to each natural lash in a ratio of 1:1.
Appearance: Natural and subtle, enhancing the existing lash line.
Durability: Easy to maintain and suitable for a more understated look.
Volume Lashes
Style: Multiple thin lashes applied to each natural lash, creating a voluminous and fluffy look in a ratio of 3+ :1
Appearance: Dramatic and glamorous, adding significant volume and depth.
Durability: Long-lasting, but may require more maintenance due to the fuller look.
Hybrid Lashes
Style: A combination of classic and volume lashes for a textured, dimensional look.
Appearance: Strikes a balance between the natural look of classic lashes and the boldness of volume lashes.
Durability: Provides a middle ground in terms of maintenance and longevity.
Lash Extension Aftercare
Avoid oil-based products around the eyes and refrain from rubbing or pulling to prevent premature lash loss and damage. Refrain from waterproof makeup since this does require an oil based solution to remove. No makeup wipes as this will tug at your extensions. Instead use your lash wash to remove your eye makeup, sweat, and natural oils. You do not have to wait 24 hours to wet your lashes. In fact, it's recommended to wash them after your appointment. Cleaning your lashes daily with your lash wash is crucial for your eye health and retention. Absolutely no mascara on your extensions as it will clump and damage your lashes. Do sleep on your back to prevent friction between your lashes and the pillow. I highly recommend using a silk or satin pillowcase. Remember to brush your lashes daily with a clean, spoolie brush to prevent tangling and for a neater appearance.
Duration of the Application Process:
A full set of eyelash extensions can take several hours, so be prepared for a time commitment. Fullset can take up to 3 hours (4 hours if you're booking a specific style such as manga/anime). Refills take about 1 - 1.5 hrs for a standard refill, 1.5 - 2 hours for an ultra fill. Factor in the initial application time and potential touch-up sessions when scheduling your appointment.
In conclusion, getting eyelash extensions can be a transformative experience that gives you a confidence boost while saving you time every morning. While keeping all these factors in mind, and committing to proper aftercare, you'll be on your way to achieving the lashes you've always wanted. Enjoy your journey to enhancing your natural beauty with confidence!
